In fact, many patients have probably already asked about the very thing that’s on your mind!

Consider this a Q&A session. Below, you’ll find some commonly asked questions about the recovery process, along with answers provided by professionals. These FAQs shouldn’t replace an in-depth conversation with your dentist, but they can help you feel prepared going in to your consultation.

How Long is Recovery After Dental Implant Surgery?

It will depend on how your body heals. Some people simply recover more slowly or quickly than others – though following any and all post-op instructions will certainly help! Generally speaking, you can expect a full recovery to take between three to six months. You’ll likely have already resumed your normal everyday activities by then, but your jawbone and implants will still be in the process of fusing together.

Can I Drive Home After Dental Implant Surgery?

This also depends. If you’ll be receiving a strong sedative, you’ll likely be asked to make arrangements for transportation to and from surgery. Make sure you confirm this with your dentist so you can plan in advance.

Will My Gums Bleed?

Bleeding is considered normal after dental implant surgery. You should be able to stop the flow by firmly pressing a damp cloth or gauze to the area. However, if your gums continue to bleed periodically for more than three days, call your dentist immediately.

Will I Need Stitches?

Yes – which is part of the reason your dentist will tell you to be gentle on your gums for the next week or two. It’s important for the stitches to stay intact while the tissue is still healing. Depending on the type of stitches used, they may dissolve on their own, so this is another good detail to confirm with your dentist.

Should I Brush My Teeth After Dental Implant Surgery?

Absolutely! Oral hygiene will be very important after dental implant surgery. Your mouth will be more vulnerable than usual, making it necessary to mitigate bacteria buildup. Brush gently and slowly so as not to disturb the treatment area, and consider adding a salt water rinse to your routine (letting the water fall out of your mouth instead of spitting). Salt is anti-bacterial and can help alleviate soreness.

Whether you didn’t see your question on this list or thought, “I should ask that during my consultation!” write your thoughts down. That way, you can make sure you and your dentist address all of your concerns in one sitting. Naturally, if you do come up with something after seeing your dentist, they’d be happy to answer your question over the phone as well.

Stay in touch with your dentist, and you’ll be prepared for your dental implant surgery post-op.

About the Author

Dr. Jonathan Aguilar is an experienced dentist in Denton.
