Mother’s Day is a great time to celebrate all the women who take care of everyone in their lives. They might put themselves last, so it’s prime time to show them they are just as important. You might relate to this yourself, but it’s crucial you prioritize your oral and overall health.

Making sure you have nothing to worry about in yourself can let you be there for those around you. It might seem small, but starting with your smile can have a big impact. Here are four ways you can help it be stronger.

1.)  Keep Up with Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Whether you’re a soon-to-be mom or an experienced one, hormonal changes can affect your oral health. Your gums might be more swollen or tender, which can increase your risk of gum disease. Morning sickness can also weaken your enamel and make you more prone to developing a cavity.

While you may have a higher chance of dental problems, simply brushing and flossing twice daily can protect your smile. Better yet, consider getting an electric toothbrush and water flosser, as they can be more effective at removing plaque that spells trouble. That way, your smile stays strong throughout motherhood.

2.)  Make Sure Your Diet is Smile-Friendly

You might indulge in sugary or acidic foods and drinks, but you should do your best to limit them and keep them in moderation. These items can lead to decay if you aren’t careful. Instead, try to stick to tooth-friendly options like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy products. Wash it all down with water to support your oral and overall health in the long run.

3.)  Try to Ease Your Stress

As a mother, you might be stressed and carry a lot of your family’s burden. This can impact your smile as you may grind or clench your teeth more often. Over time, you may notice increased wear that can turn into damage, dental problems, and even gum recession. Not only that, but your immune system might also be weakened, meaning your body will have a harder time fighting against infection, like those in your mouth.

Try to manage any worries and anxieties with relaxation techniques. Exercise can also be beneficial, but general self-care can be major in supporting your overall health.

4.)  Schedule Your Dental Checkup and Cleaning

Although your family might rely on you, you have your own people that you can turn to for help. Your dentist is one, and they are here for you to get the strong smile you deserve. By having semi-annual checkups and cleanings, they can make sure any dental problems are tackled early, saving you time and money later.

It might be hard juggling your own visits along with every other member in your household, so consider a family dentist to streamline the process.

In the end, Mother’s Day is a great time to remind yourself that you deserve all the same care and attention you put into other people. By following the tips above, you can help make sure you take a step toward a stronger smile and better self-care.
